            | Coming
Soon: Disruption: New Short Fiction from AfricaWe are excited to be the North American publisher for Disruption, the
newest Short Story Day Africa anthology. Short Story Day Africa is
a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the next
generation of African voices through workshops, mentorship, and
their annual Short Story Day Africa prize. Disruption, the
organization's ninth release, features 21 new and emerging authors
from across the African continent exploring the many ways that we
grow, adapt, and survive in the face of our ever-changing global
realities. In these evocative, often prescient, stories, new and
emerging writers from across Africa investigate many of the
pressing issues of our time: climate change, pandemics, social
            upheaval, surveillance, and more.

Recently, our friends at the Johannesburg
Review of Books announced the winner and
first and second runners-up of this year's prize. The three winning
stories are available to read at their website. Disruption is
out this September, and pre-orders are available now.

            | Q&A with the Authors of Madame
LivingstoneThis month, we were proud to release Madame Livingstone, a graphic novel
set in the Congo in World War I. Illustrated by Barly Baruti,
written by Christophe Cassiau-Haurie, and translated by
Ivanka Hahnenberger, Madame Livingstone finds Gaston Mercier,
a lieutenant in the Royal Belgian Army, arriving at Lake
Tanganyika, Congo in 1915 on orders to sink a critical German
warship, the Graf Von Götzen. To aid him on this mission, he
is paired with a local guide, an enigmatic mixed-race African and
the supposed son of the famous explorer, David Livingstone.
Together, while the pair hunts down the ship, Mercier learns more
about the land around him and discovers the irrevocable and tragic
effects of colonialism on the local people.
 We chatted with Barly,
Christophe, and Ivanka recently to talk about how the
team brought this story to life, the comics scene across the
African continent, and what it was like to bring this work to a new
            audience. Madame
Livingstone is out now, and available through your
favorite bookseller. You can also read
an excerpt from the book at our site. | |    |

            by Helen Brain and Cape
Town: A Place Between by Henry Trotter.

 The Rising Tide
is the second book in Helen's Fiery Spiral trilogy, a dystopian
fantasy series for young adult readers. The Rising Tide continues
the story of Ebba, a teenager who has lived her entire life in a
bunker deep within Cape Town's Table Mountain. Believing the world
above had been destroyed, Ebba is shocked to discover that not only
is the world "above" safe, but that she is the heir to a
massive fortune. Ebba must now use her newfound power to save her
friends— and the world. She must listen to her instincts, even if
it means destroying the things she holds most dear. Who can she
trust to help stop the second “Calamity,” now just days away? Who
will betray her? You can enter to win a copy of the book here.

 Cape Town: A
Place Between by Henry Trotter is the first in our Intimate
Geographies series, short books of around 100 pages which aim to
help readers go beyond the surface of fascinating places. Cape Town weaves
the history of city's intersecting identities with Henry's own
experiences as an American living, working, and building a life
there for nearly twenty years. While not a traditional travel
            guide, Cape Town
invites readers into the city with hopes of sparking first-hand
exploration with its mix of travel narrative and literary
non-fiction. As Henry (who is also the series editor) describes the
Intimate Geographies series, "The books are meant to deliver
just the right amount of insight for you to understand the deeper
meanings behind the experiences you have there. The books of the
Intimate Geographies series are not substitutes for traditional
guidebooks, but their perfect companions, filling in the intimate
details that other sources leave out."  Enter to win the ebook
of Cape Town: A Place Between.
